Stock Photography

  • Royalty Free stock photography is bought once, then can be used for any media venue you desire. Royalty Free images may also be used by others, so don't be surprised if another company is using the same image.
  • Rights Managed stock photos are 'leased'. Leases guarantee sole usage based criteria such as time-frame, use, and venue. For instance, you may Lease an image for your website, and no one else may use it on their website while you use it. However, someone may use it on a billboard or book cover. After the lease is up, the lease may be renewed, or the image may be leased to another entity.
  • Exclusive License stock photography is purchased. The buyers may do whatever they want with that image, and the seller may not resell it. Exclusive licenses are rare.
  • Personal Use stock photos are generally free or inexpensive licenses when used for personal or educational projects (personal website, homework, etc.). Personal Use stock photography must generally be purchased before an image may be used for commercial purposes.
  • Truly Free Stock Photos are rare. Most are actually Personal Use (see above). When you do find them, however, feel free to use them in any way you want. Some require that you acknowledge the photographer or agency when using them.
